Echoing the theme of deTour 2015 – “CONNECTION”, MobArt is pleased to invite two Hong Kong artists, Angel Hui and Wendy Tai, to create site-specific art installations at PMQ. The artists, through the use of seemingly mundane, everyday-life objects and materials, explore the connection between our daily life and the culture, history and humanity that surround us.

Exhibition 1
“Paper Dragon” by Angel Hui
Dragon, a legendary myth that has intrigued the Chinese for centuries and have people fantasize and speculate the shape and form and the probability of its existence. The artist is no different, she is fascinated by the various interpretations of the dragon throughout Chinese history.
Through drawing the different interpretations of dragon from Qin to Qing dynasty, on a roll of 10 to 15 metre long toilet paper, the artist explores the connection among these dragons from different eras and forms her own “Paper Dragon” which spans thousands years of Chinese history.
The choice of toilet paper, an ubiquitous daily object, as medium for this Chinese painting plays on the contrasts between the extraordinary and the ordinary; the ancient and the modern, and encourages audience to create their own modern-day dragon.
About Angel Hui
Angel, Hui Hoi Kiu received her BA (Hons) in Visual Arts from the Hong Kong Baptist University in 2014. She joined an exchange program and studied BA in Chinese Painting in Minzu University of China (Beijing) for a year in 2012. Angel is now studying Master of Fine Art in Experimental Art at the Central Academy of Fine Arts in Beijing.
Exhibition 2
“Peaks” by Wendy Tai
In contemporary, developed societies, people typically start and end life within an impersonal hospital setting. Drawing from her own experience of losing her mother to cancer, the conceptual pieces by the artist contemplate the tension between the clinical and the human.
By manipulating clinical imagery, materia medica and natural elements, the artist hopes to lead viewers to consider the role of human sentiment and dignity within the experience of modern medicine. “Peaks” (2015) refers to the connection people have with others and the emotional variations they encounter in relationships. It also alludes to electrocardiography of the human heart. The salt is a metaphor for humans as the ‘salt of the Earth’; this phrase was initially a biblical reference, but is now used as a common phrase refering to humanity in general.
About Wendy Tai
Wun Ting Wendy TAI (b. 1985) is a mixed-media artist interested in creating temporal, interactive and performative installations. Her work ranges from quiet, personal introspection to playful, social engagement. Tai holds a BA in Fine Arts from University of Pennsylvania and an MFA from Rinehart School of Sculpture, Maryland Institute College of Art. She has spent time in Canada and the United States. Tai is currently teaching art and continuing her studio practice in Hong Kong.
Workshops
MobArt has also organized art workshops on the weekends for participants to have fun and gain hands on experience in Chinese painting and alternative print making.
