About Carly Scoufos
Carly Scoufos is an contemporary artist based in Brisbane, Australia. She studied at the Santa Rosa Junior College in California, before completing a Bachelor of Fine Art with First Class Honours from the Queensland College of Art, Brisbane.
After graduating Carly was awarded the Queensland Art Gallery’s 2008 Melville Haysom Memorial Art Scholarship and exhibited in QAG’s Watermall Café as part of the gallery’s Starter Space program. In 2009, following the receipt of the Siganto Travel Scholarship, Carly undertook a studio residency at Youkobo Art Space in Tokyo where she presented her first solo exhibition, Seam. Over the past four years she has completed numreous corporate and public commissions both in Australia and overseas. These include a foyer installation for Aecom Brisbane Offices, a large-scale artwork for the new Gold Coast University Hospital, an atrium sculpture for Phoenix City Beijing, China and another for a commercial/retail centre in Hong Kong. More recently Carly has completed a sculpture for the new Macquarie Centre in Sydney and has also just commenced fabrication on a large suspended sculpture for the new Perth Domestic Airport in Western Australia.
Artist Statement
While my earlier studio practice dealt with the material translation of abstract and fleeting moments within natural and fluid phenomena, subsequent works have focused on bridging elements of the mechanistic and industrial to the organic and natural patterns of growth and decay. The woven technique I utilise has associations with traditional textile processes such as needlework, lace making and knitting, in which single strands of fibre are interwoven to create structure and define space. I am also interested in the notion of part to whole and incorporating this within my practice to create a perceptual pull between two-dimensional sculpture and three-dimensional drawing.
